As you can see I'm ALL smiles because I allowed myself out of the house for another brief Amsterdam Fashion Week visit. Oh the simple joys of life. I decided to wear my black Peter Pan collar dress by French Connection, that I also wore to the ELLE Christmas dinner, and managed to capture (half of) it quickly in my bedroom. Ah well, at least it gives you an idea.

AFW report: Winde Rienstra

I allowed myself a few hour break to visit Amsterdam Fashion Week last night. Good thing I can practically see the venue from my window. One of the shows that I was really looking forward to was Winde Rienstra. Not only because I had recently spoken to her for a while and found out she's an ambitious and sweet young woman, also because I admire her work that is best placed somewhere in between fashion and art. As you can see, this collection consisted of three-dimensional, sculptural pieces made in unusual materials such as wood and cardboard combined with silk.

Last week I handed in my Master thesis for the one big check point with my counselor. Feeling happy, confident and almost done. So imagine my spirits dropping as I open the feedback document and read that there were "some really big problems". Dammit. (Yeah, those cute blue balloons are all comments, and it's filled with them). Basically I got way too caught up in writing a fun, readable article rather than an academic one and the structure is off. I have 9 more days to change it all - total mental breakdown moment :P. Although my goal for This chick's got style is to post daily, I just wanted to let you know that you might see a little less posts during that time. Back to normal very soon, I hope!

It might seem slightly odd that I'm wearing just a dress and no tights in the middle of January. And, well, it is actually. I have no explanation other than that I was just trying out dresses for some fashion events coming up this week - Amsterdam Fashion Week not in the least - and snapped some pictures in between. Lights, camera, action!

This morning, after about three hours of sleep, I taped another segment for RTL Boulevard that will be aired tonight at 18.30!

It's a big daily news show, the same one I had my TV debut on two weeks ago (as you could see here). And I'm back today as 'fashion expert' and I just wanted to give you a quick impression so excuse this crappy iPhone pic :P I thought I might be a little nervous since it was my second time but I actually just love the rush you get of being in front of the camera and not exactly knowing how it will turn out. And... action!

Finding a magazine on your doorstep can be a real joy and noticing you're actually in it, really makes things exciting. So I wanted to do a quick post on three big interviews/features of This chick's got style in magazines that came out this month. Two of them are one page interviews, in Fashionista and Flaire and a huge picture of me in 'styling action' in Nelly magazine. Thanks to the editors that featured me! :)

For those of you that were waiting or hoping for an outfit with my new shoes (so was I :P) I'll get on that right away. Everything is coming together - work, deadlines, meetings, personal events and traveling - and I could hardly oversee posting these past two days.

What can I say... Sale is treating me well this season. I bumped in to these babies for a disgustingly good price and since they're by one of my favorite shoe brands Deena & Ozzy (remember these and these pairs from my ever growing collection?) I couldn't say no. And I don't even care about the fact that these challenge my heel walking skills on a whole new level. I guess all common sense goes out the window when I see a pair of shoes I 'need'. You understand, right? ;)

It's a very heavy, beautiful and surprisingly affordable set of books with interviews and iconic pictures that tell us more about designers take on style, fashion, aesthetics and work. What I love about books like these is that you get a sense of designers personality, which I think is essential in understanding their collections ("I'd describe my work as Frankenstein and Garbo, falling in love in a leather bar" - Rick Owens).

It's one of those cold days on which only a bulky faux fur and thick tights would suffice. The one downside is that this one doesn't actually close, so I need to figure out a fashion solution to that. And isn't it about time you saw these impressive boots in an outfit post? I wasn't as excited as I expected myself to be once the boots got here, but we're slowly warming up to each other.

Remember this post I did on one of my favorite non-fashion blogs? This one, mostly based on reader submissions, is another enormous blog crush that is just so aesthetically pleasing. Night at the ELLE Style Awards

Here's a recap of my amazing night at the ELLE Style Awards 2012. Like I said, the theme of this year was 'The Roaring Twenties' and three selected stylists were given the task to put together looks that represented that era in a unique, unexpected way. The first stylist that showed that night - gold and black looks inspired by the 1927 movie Metropolos - took home the grand prize. And the ELLE Personal Style Award was, rightfully, handed out to Valentijn de Hingh. I think we all want a piece of that dress, please. Long story short; a great evening with good friends, good fashion and endless champagne.

Excuse these poor pictures, I was literally just having too much fun and too little time to do a proper outfit shoot. Had to make them black and white because the entire room was decorated in pink lights so all you could see is a lilac version of me. (In reality this clutch is bright red and so is my lipstick). Oh well, at least this way you get an idea and I tell myself the blurry black and white thing actually kind of suits the twenties ;) More pics to follow tomorrow!

I'm in the middle of putting together my roaring twenties look for tonight's ELLE Style Awards. I'm still in doubt between this low waisted piece that I picked up for the occasion or a gold fringe dress, but either way it's best accessorized with bare legs a fur coat and sky high heels.

The ELLE Style Awards were actually the first big event I ever attended, exactly two years go, with Andy and my friend Nicole (who now also works at ELLE). I can still so vividly picture myself there, not knowing a single person and feeling almost overwhelmed at how big (and cool) it all was. Knowing the long way I've come since then and now actually working for the magazine makes me beyond excited for tonight!

This weekend I received a call from one of the biggest Dutch news and entertainment shows: RTL Boulevard. Would I be interested to appear on the show as a fashion expert? Subject of the day: men in heels! Surely, having 14 cm heels practically glued to my feet, I have something to say about that.

Seeing myself on national television and knowing that about 1 million people will be watching, is pretty thrilling and a bit scary :P

Shopping: Leopard Rika dress

This over the knee dress is probably one of my favorite sale buys ever. Rika always has gorgeous printed fabrics and this pink, blue and rusty leopard is no exception. I especially like how simple the shape is, to tone down this pretty outstanding print, and the subtle zip details in the sleeves and back give it a luxurious feel. It's something I saw on sale a while ago and instantly knew I was getting. Outfit to follow soon!

Since you were so excited about seeing my living room, here's a preview at my brand new blog office!

Now that I have the apartment all to myself, I'm turning the smaller bedroom in to a place to write and work. This is where the magic happens! It was either a walk in closet or this. Being able to shut the door and separate work from my living room really brings piece of mind. Working from home, especially with the different things I do, just makes sense and is one of the benefits of this job. Who knows, I might rent a place later, but right now I'm very pleased. My office is nowhere near being finished, but with just 4 weeks until graduation I'll pick up on decorating afterwards.

Big 2011 overview

This year has been about traveling, big personal and career moments and creating great memories. Let me take you though some highlights!

2011 is the year I traveled to London three times, to the River Island head quarters, to John Lewis and My Wardrobe. I visited LFW, and saw the Burberry Creepers fresh off the runway at the Burberry Horseferry house. Paris was big in 2011 as well, with three visits. On a Lancôme trip I met Mario Testino and I had an amazing Paris Fashion Week. Saw a bunch of shows including the Viktor & Rolf show. There were more short trips, like Florence with Luisaviaroma, Sweden with Nelly and Antwerp a few times. During summer, me and my boyfriend packed our stuff for 5 weeks of Thailand and Vietnam. Sure wish I was on one of those sunny beaches right now!

2011 had some big personal changes in the works. I'm now making a living by blogging and no longer work for my dad's communication company. Then in february I started interning at ELLE and got offered an editor job (yay!). My first designer bag - the Balenciaga - followed to celebrate. And after what seemed like forever (I'm a terrible driver) I got my license. By the end of 2011, the book I published with my father got nominated for the Marketing Literature Prize and I won the ELLE Fashion Twitter Award. On top of things my twin brother moved out of our apartment last week and I now have our place to myself. (Creating a blog office as we speak!)

Looking back, it seems impossible to have squeezed all of this into one year. I worked my butt off and made my dreams come true. Thanks for all your support during everything! What was your highlight of the year?

Gisele is a Japanese fashion magazine that I don't understand a single word of but that nonetheless looks very appealing. Sale Shopping: tips and trics

I've written you a Sale shopping 'how to' below :) Tell me your sale strategies and successes in the comments!

Great bargains, red sale signs and groups of people can be overwhelming. That - and the thrill of finding something cheap - have often led me to waste money during sale. How to go in with a plan?

BEFORE SHOPPING

þ Do your research

Register for newsletters from your favorite stores. Some stores have fixed sale dates, some will announce it in a newsletter. Also; browse the online shop of your favorite store to pre-select what you want to try on in the actual store.

þ Make a wish list

What do you need? Non-seasonal pieces or basics like a leather jacket, shift dress, a clutch, knitwear, a lace skirt or denim shirt are perfect sale buys.

þ Go for high end brands and luxurious fabrics

Which luxury brands would you love to shop bout can normally not afford? Sale is the time to get a high end item for what you'd normally spend on the high street. Same goes for fancy fabrics like silk or cashmere, that might otherwise be too expensive. High quality, low price... Score!

þ Set a budget

You're almost ready to go! Now set a budget and stick to that. However; allow yourself one 'must have' that you run into.

DURING SHOPPING:

þ Would you buy it full price?

Getting a cheap item might be exciting in the store, but once you wear it, your sweet deal is irrelevant. The garment still looks, feels and fits the same. So make sure it suits your style and you would love it the same if it were full price.

þ Will you like it next season?

Ask yourself if it's just a one season wonder. By the time you'll actually get to wear it, you might not like it anymore if it's too trendy. So use the wish list: those wardrobe staples will last all year long.

þ Wear comfortable (and your favorite) clothes

Wear something comfortable that's easy to change out of. Another tip: bring tights for dress shopping. Also, wear some of your favorite pieces. This makes you see if something would fit with your current wardrobe.

þ Hold on while shopping

If you're unsure about an item, just hold on to it while making your round in the store. Sale shopping goes quickly so this way you won't be disappointed to see it's gone once you decide to get it.

þ Have fun

You might just run in to an unexpected gem - that's ok ;)

The Acne skirt that I've been eying for a while finally got on sale. So I did what I had to do: take it home. The texture and color of this skirt are so unusual because of the midnight blue peeking through. Even though it's from their F/W collection, I mostly look forward to wearing it without tights in a few months.

What I've been up to? Totally random, but I just wanted to show you my latest big purchase: a custom built wooden table and wooden picnic bench. (The last is something I always dreamed of having. So, so SO excited about this post. I just had a meeting at the ELLE office and got handed my first business cards with their logo on it. Am I a complete geek because this makes me very excited? The entire process of putting together a magazine has always fascinated me. After having interned at Grazia and ELLE first, I feel very proud to be an 'official' editor now.

Until the end of January, graduating is my top priority (aarghh... just a few more weeks!). And the very next day you'll find me at my ELLE desk, mostly writing about fashion and beauty topics. Since I'll be working there part time, This chick's got style is updated with the same dedication and with a new daily post - just as I do now. Hope you'll join me for the ride!

This week was centered around work, family and food. Celebrating Sinterklaas is my favorite family traditions. It's similar to Christmas and involves a big pile of gifts, lots of food, laughing and music. A blog that immediately made it to my Bloglovin list is Oh, hello friend. I have this inexpliccable love for paper tags, gift wrapping, printed tape and little notes. And Danni's blog just happens to be all about that.

One idea that struck me in particular is the 'books of notes' she made for her husband Nicholas. It's a hand made scrapbook with encouraging messages, cards, cute little surprises, quotes and lots of love. Such a fun idea to make for a friend, a parent or anyone you care about. Boyfriends, take note of this hint ;)

Parka's, bright florals and tribal prints, scuba dresses and lace... there surely was enough to see at the River Island spring/summer 2012 presentation in London. We got to speak with head of design Farida, who started folding clothes at the stores as a teenager and since then worked her way up to the top. My favorites seen here are the matching pencil skirt and bustier, the army green parka and uhm... that insanely delicious raspberry champagne ;)

Marni next H&M guest designer: the collection video

Waking up to e-mails with the headline 'Marni is the new guest designer for H&M'. Now that's a nice way to start your day. First thing I thought was: wow, is Versace even out of stores yet? And the second thing was: Please, please, please do shoes! I've admired Marni's sophisticated and signature prints and phenomenal shoes (their cut out wedge caused me to spent hours on eBay and Yoox).

According to H&M, the collection is inspired on classic Marni pieces, like their 7/8th pants, pleated dresses and jacquard knits. All executed in tribal meets Bauhaus prints. I'm curious how this collection will play out and we'll be able to see it 'live' in stores on March 8th. For now: this video gives a good impression. Are you excited or not?

Where to begin on filling you in on my London adventure? I flew out for an experience every fashion loving girl would be excited about. River Island invited me to their head office - a huge building filled with inspiration, pieces of fabric, clothing racks and shoes, where a whopping 600 (!) employees make the designs, patterns, online shop and marketing happen. My online stops for affordable party pieces are Topshop, Asos, Cos, Nelly and Zara (all EU-based so I don’t have import taxes). Above I’ve put together a few favorites with a twist from Asos, starting at 15 pounds! Excuse the ugly collage, I haven't found a good program for Mac yet ;)

Ha! You got me! I just bought a pair that's perfect but pinches one of my toes. I've sworn not to buy uncomfortable shoes though - you never wear them so it's a waste of money. Sometimes I prioritize looks over comfort, but I would never go as far as going a whole size up or down. Uncomfortable maybe, but painful is never ok if you ask me :P

After getting so many questions about make-up and skin routines, I’ve put together a big beauty post.  A step by step make-up tutorial is on it’s way, this is a general post.  

1) Creating a flawless face. I don’t have a lot of skin issues, but when I’m tired it immediately shows in my have (enter dark circles and pale complexion). So I apply YSL Touche Eclat under my eyes followed by a bit of MAC foundation in NC15 - it's the the lightest color they have. Next up: subtly applying bronzer from my cheeks out and some pink blush on the apples of my cheeks. A little highlighter on the cheekbones can also make you look fresh and fruity.

2) Eyes, eyes, eyes. I just eyeshadow base, black eyeliner for a subtle wing and black eyeshadow along the lash line that I blend with taupe shimmery eyeshadow on the eyelid. More on this in the tutorial – it’s super easy!  

3) Creams and skin care . Having good (looking) skin isn’t always easy, but it can make a huge difference in how you look and feel. Along the years I’ve found out what works best for my dehydrated skin. Secret ingredients are: 8 hour cream by Elizabeth Arden for dry spots and chapped lips, Vichy moisturizer for day and Embryolisse for night. Of course next to cream there are other - more intense - ways of hydrating or rejuvenating your skin that I haven’t really tried out yet but that I’m always interested in, for example with light. There’s a new laser light device that you can test at Douglas at the moment and that you can actually use at home for laser skin care. It’s called the Philips ReAura. How this works is that you just apply a gel, use the laser light to activate new cells (deep inside your skin) and lastly hydrate as you would normally do. It gives a smoother structure and reduces any pigment spots or fine lines on your face. Did you ever try this?

The worst possible thing for a blogger happened to me last night: my laptop crashed! I'm praying to the electronic gods that it will magically restart so I can make a backup of the past few weeks... (One of those things you constantly tell yourself to do, but then forget until it's too late). The one and only upside to this whole matter is that I'm off to buy my first Macbook now. Luckily I could still post today's outfit pictures from last week, but that's about it.

Last week I hopped on the fashion bus to visit sunny Antwerp. Not for a shopping trip this time but for press days at Fashion Club 70, a big Belgian fashion agency, and luxury store Verso. (A huge travel report will follow soon!) This is me right after breakfast in the Verso Café, where we found the perfect recovery for a night out; orange juice, scrambled eggs and croissants.

For inspiration on how to dress I usually look to women that have fun with clothes and look feminine yet laid back. Taylor Tomasi-Hill, Christine Centenera, Miroslava Duma, Ashley Olsen, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Poppy Delevigne, Jen Bril, Kate Bosworth and the 'French Voguettes' come to mind. I like looking at different women and getting inspired by certain elements of their style, rather than copying someone. Besides, what looks good on one person might be completely unflattering on myself. Next to that, bloggers like Elin Kling provide a great, daily source of inspiration.

I started This chick’s got style almost 3 years ago, in February of 2009. (Wow, I can’t believe how long it’s been already!) I started blogging as something for myself, just because I was reading a lot of US and Scandinavian blogs at that time. I wanted to create my own place online where I could write and put together some sort of diary on fashion related topics. There weren’t that many Dutch fashion blogs yet, so it happened at a good time. I started blogging without a strategy and had no idea it would be so defining for my career and personal life.

Juggling university, blogging, travelling and other work commitments is one of the most difficult things right now. I want to do it all, and that means I’m always busy. Basically it’s about prioritizing: my degree will always come first and there have been times where I said no to an event or trip because of exams or deadlines. Luckily I’m almost done with school and at this stage I can be pretty flexible. So when I travel or go to events I plan it around my classes and work ahead for school and know everything will work out in the end.

Dutch girls ride their bike everywhere, so that’s my daily little work out. Luckily I don’t have to pay much attention to staying in shape. Nonetheless, I want to take care of my body, but my irregular schedule often makes me skip on gym visits. (I try to go once a week). And despite my snack cravings – love to eat – I try to eat ‘real’ food and limit processed stuff with weird ingredients with names I can’t even pronounce :P

When talking about style icons, Kate Moss will inevitably come up. Of course there is a new generation of tastemakers (and sure, there has always been controversy around her) but browsing my big Kate Moss by Mario Testino coffeetable book, I decided she's still somewhere topping my list. I’ve always admired Kate for her diversity, being naturally style savvy and running a family and a business empire at the same time. After all, next to being an iconic model she is a (guest)designer, has her own perfume and has been the face of Rimmel London for years. Now she takes the plunge from designing clothes to beauty as she just launched her own lipstick line for them. I’m happy to see that amongst the six shades is Kate’s signature red, and luckily for me (and for you!) Rimmel is giving away a 1000 of Kate’s lipsticks on Facebook.

Somehow when I wear this jacket, Russel Brand's song from Get him to the Greek pops in to my head (the exact lyrics go something like: "When the world slips you a Jeffrey, stroke the furry wall". Uhhm, right). Either way, I love wearing a good faux fur because it's like walking in a soft, hairy blanket all day and yet you look dressed up. This one is actually black with deep purple, but I didn't get a chance to photograph it well since my camera battery died within three minutes.

Ideally: cheese cake / carrot cake / brownies / scones and tea. Realistically: I love fruit smoothies, so I’ll have a banana and strawberry smoothie or green tea. To eat I'll have toasted wholegrain bread with cheese or tuna salad or something, maybe some fruit like mango. Crackers or muesli also pass my plate every now and then.

Ok… this is a long answer!

I always had a huge interest in fashion, in text, in magazines and in media in general. My parents both have their own communication company so growing up I was surrounded by people that put knowledge about writing, branding and communication in to practice. (As a kid I said that I would NEVER follow their footsteps, yet here I am). At the age of 14 I started working for my dad, who is actually Holland’s bestseller in communication books (some of the books he wrote are Basisboek Communicatie, Communicatie Handboek, Communicatiemanagement and Brand-id). I’m so proud of them and they’ve always guided me to reach my goals.

At 17 I chose to study Science of Communication because it suited my interest in media. In the third year I landed an internship at Grazia magazine as an editor and that learned me a lot. I did my first interviews, wrote articles, had to be independent yet work in a professional team and got to see how a magazine works. A year later I took a break from my Master to do a second internship at ELLE (where I was writing). Which was one of the best experiences and biggest adventures I've ever had. I’m very happy to be back there when I graduate soon!

Hi anonymous. Personally, I would want to be fit and work out a little whether I was blogging or not. But I agree; lot of fashion bloggers are a certain size. (Just as most girls we see in mass media these days). However, there are succesful blogs by more full figured girls as well. To me, what makes blogs interesting is the diversity in styles, opinions, lifestyles and also in body shape.

Made my way to The Hague yesterday, to visit the Dutch Fashion Awards 2011. A big award - in an even bigger church - that opens doors to Dutch designers. The show was interesting and luckily I managed to switch seats with a friend so I got to take some decent pictures! Big winner of the evening was Conny Groenewegen, with a knit centered collection.

Yesterday I visited the H&M spring/summer 2012 press day and once again I left the building with inspiration and an imaginary wish list. My number 1 must have is that dreamy off white leather skirt with see through fabric coming out underneath (pic 7). Actually, the off white leather pants and biker vest, neon yellow bra, clutches and leather necklace couldn't hurt either... For the boys I'm crazy about those striped jumpers and the maroon suit (pic 4 and 17). Which item is your favorite?

Our book is nominated!

Not really fashion related, but there are some things going on that I simply wanted to share with you! After all, this is also a part of what I do. You might have read that my dad, Wil Michels, and I recently published a book called Focus op fans. It's the first Dutch book about branding and fan strategy and we recently got some amazing news. It's nominated for the Marketing Literature prize of 2011! A big deal in our work field, and we are very proud and honored.

Next to that, we've been giving lectures about the book - Wil also gives creative workshops - and one of them was yesterday. In a room of a 150 people at an SRM guru lecture to be exact. (If you work or study in the communication field; one of the speakers once was 'The purple cow' author Seth Godin now that's a guru!) I shared an insiders' view on blogging, spoke about how brands can approach bloggers, what collaborations usually go like, etcetera. It gives such a rush to be up there, tell your story, hear other's opinions and to meet interesting people. That's some of the best parts about working to me.
