Meet the Olympus pen

After I did the 'What's in my bag: festival essentials', I got quite a few questions about that camera. I've become rather attached to it, and since I often get asked which cameras I use, it's time to properly introduce you to: my Olympus PenIf you have any more questions, leave them in the comments!

Next to my big equipment - the Canon 550D used with a 30mm/1.4 lens - I need a handbag friendly option that won't let me down on snap-worthy situations. Enter the Olympus Pen, pictured here. I use mine with a 14-42/3.5 lens and am looking to expand with a portrait one. (As with DSLR's, the lenses are interchangeable, everything is just smaller). After researching photography blogs and trying it out myself I fell in love and no, it's not just it's adorable vintage looks that seduced me. The quality, even just with my standard lens, is up to DSLR-standards, it has a touch screen and the filters are the best. (Admittedly, I'm a massive Instagram-addict so any easy way to subtly upgrade pictures is welcomed with open arms!). Anyway, this is the one camera that's always with me on the go because it's so lightweight and actually fits in my PS11. Quite an achievement on it's own. Festival looks, food pics and other Fashion Journal material most likely comes from my good old Pen pal.

I need it! I'm quite a lazy girl and I always complain how my DSLR is too heavy and big to carry it around. x

Awesome! I purchased the very first EPL-1 last year and I am still super happy with it - the arty effects are pretty good and it is perfect when you're too lazy to shoot with a reflex camera :-)

Bedankt voor de tip! Dit is een goede oplossing voor het DSLR (zwaar) vs Iphone (slechte kwaliteit) dilemma ;)

Really great you did this post Yara!

I'm seriously thinking in getting either the Olimpus or the Lumix GF1.
But I'm not sure, do you know the difference between them?
Or if you can tell me the blogs you found while doing your research¿?

and last, does it have the option for recording videos???

Thanks a lot!!

Lijkt me een fijne camera, ook de stalen behuizing! Mijn canon is ook echt iets te lomp om overal mee naartoe te slepen helaas! Misschien een goede optie deze Olympus!

Great tips! I'veen looking for a camera myself for a while but knew that I'd be too lazy to carry a bigger one around and this one looks perfect for what I'm looking for. I'll have to try it out myself, it's my birthday too soon so this post couldn't come in handier ;-)

@ Lily; this is the Pen EP3, there are more affordable options than this one that are also Olympus Pen!

@ Sue
I think they are both great options :) For me I was firstly recommended this one by a friend and saw the great pics she takes with them. Then I got to try it and it just won me over because of the light weight, settings, filters, cool look... it just works :)
I would just type in Olympus Pen and you'd already get results - or with 'review' or things like that.
A camera is a personal thing so I'd highly recommend reading online to compare all the facts and the prices and then go to the store and take your time to try them out :)
This one also has an option for videos, but I'm sure most compacts of this quality do :) Let me know what you decided on!

@ That's gryt
I still carry the Canon a lot, mostly for outfits and fashion week. This Olympus is mostly used by me in more personal settings or when I'm on the go. (I often bring both as well, when I'm traveling). So that could be a birthday, a party, dinner, on the go, a press meeting etcetera.

@ Arlu
Wow, good job in noticing! Indeed, I switched from Nikon to Canon about 1 year ago. My nikon only had 3 focus points which made outfit shooting impossible. Like I said, its a super personal thing and to me Canon is a bit user friendlier and I like the material better in my hands. It of course already differs with the body you pick and Nikon and Canon both have great ones. Interested to hear what makes you prefer Nikon! :)
